The beginner recipe box

These four guides cover the foundation. Once you understand the infusion, the rest is mostly swapping regular butter or oil for the infused version.

01 · Foundation

Infused Butter

A flexible base for cookies, brownies, toast, and plenty of other recipes.

You will need

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • Decarboxylated cannabis flower
  • Small saucepan, fine strainer, and heat-safe container

Basic method

  1. Decarboxylate your flower first. Break it into small pieces and heat it gently in the oven before infusion.
  2. Melt the butter with the water over low heat.
  3. Add the prepared flower and keep the mixture at a very gentle simmer for about 2 to 3 hours. Do not let it boil hard.
  4. Strain the mixture into a heat-safe container.
  5. Chill until the butter firms up, then remove it from the water layer and store it in the refrigerator.

Homemade potency can vary a lot. Label the container clearly and test a very small amount before using it in a full recipe.

Infused Oil

A simple alternative for brownies, savory cooking, and recipes that call for oil instead of butter.

You will need

  • 1 cup coconut oil or another cooking oil
  • Decarboxylated cannabis flower
  • Small saucepan or slow cooker
  • Fine strainer and clean container

Basic method

  1. Decarboxylate your flower before starting the infusion.
  2. Warm the oil over low heat.
  3. Add the prepared flower and let it infuse gently for about 2 to 3 hours. Avoid high heat.
  4. Strain the oil into a clean container.
  5. Label it clearly and store it according to the storage needs of the oil you used.

Coconut oil is a beginner-friendly choice because it works well in both baked goods and plenty of savory recipes.

03 · Easy Bake

Simple Infused Cookies

Use your favorite cookie recipe and replace some or all of the regular butter with infused butter.

The easy route

  1. Choose a cookie recipe you already like.
  2. Replace the called-for butter with infused butter. For a gentler batch, use a blend of regular and infused butter.
  3. Mix and bake the cookies according to the original recipe.
  4. Divide the batch evenly so each cookie is as consistent as possible.
  5. Label and store the finished cookies separately from regular snacks.

Do not eyeball servings. Keep the cookie size consistent and start with a small portion.

04 · Easy Bake

Simple Infused Brownies

A beginner-friendly classic that works with homemade infused butter or oil.

The easy route

  1. Choose a brownie mix or a brownie recipe you already enjoy.
  2. Replace the regular oil or butter with your infused version. For a lighter batch, mix infused and regular fat.
  3. Prepare and bake the brownies according to the original directions.
  4. Let the pan cool fully before cutting it into equal-size pieces.
  5. Label and store the brownies securely away from regular food.

Equal-size pieces matter. A giant corner brownie and a tiny center square are not the same serving.

Educational content only. Follow local laws. Homemade edibles can be difficult to dose consistently. Start with a small portion, allow plenty of time before consuming more, label infused food clearly, and keep it securely away from children and pets.
